Lydia's Birth!

Lydia’s Birth

This being the 8th birth experience that our team has been through, we have protocol. we have birth plans. we have arrangements.

and then you get the phone call. I had set aside Thursday, as in: made absolutely no plans so that i could to clean, grocery shop, prepare for having Mike, Abbey and Lainey stay with me.

Mel called a little before 8 am and says “ Oh. I am so glad you answered, my doctor is wanting to induce me”  I shriek and get so excited and tell her i will be there. I get off the phone and run around and think of nothing except that Mel is going to have her baby.

Val calls me and starts going through a check list of things i should bring, and i think to myself, i love her brain. I love Val’s brain. all i am thinking is that i don’t want to miss the birth and i am so excited about meeting this little baby girl.

There were a few break down in the protocol- what happens when the labor starts during a work day and all the husbands are at work and you ain’t keeping this momma from the laboring friend. Well, we all piled in the car and Drew took the girls over to Rem’s house and between Rem, Drew, Sarah, and a woman who babysits for us the kids had a fun day.

And as i walk into the hospital i remember that my house is pretty unkempt( to put it nicely) , we have no food, and i have visitors coming that evening. ouch.  this is why you don’t wait until the day they arrive, Mare.

Melanie was amazing. She was glowing and excited and ready to meet her little one. Labor did not go as fast as we thought it might ( she was 3 weeks early) so i was able to dart home, go to the grocery store and pick up the house.

While at the store, i got a text from Ryan telling me i should come back up. I dropped the groceries off, and beelined for the hospital. ( in a bus of course)

When i arrived, Mel was in the thick of Labor but made it look so effortless. I mean she was breathing, she was relaxing, she was focusing, it was Melanie, full of grace. always.

Her doctor came in and told us to put on scrubs- she was going to break hospital policy and let us be in the actual delivery room. We were elated. Mel was going fast, and we could not figure out how to get our shoe slip covers on, and i had this moment of panic that i would be getting sterile (?) and miss the baby....

but we ran in, and with two big pushes Lydia arrived. Mel was absolutley a champ and it was such an incredible moment to share with her.

The funny thing is that at almost the same minute our 7 guests arrived and Drew, the girls and Kopke were waiting for them at the airport. They brought the crew back to our house and everyone dined on drip beef that Melanie had put in the crock pot that morning. unbelievable.

Melanie's births are everything a birth should be: drama, darting around, excited, giddy, things can move so fast...adrenaline and then of course gorgeous babes!

Lydia lovin...
